The Kingdom of Bhutan,

nestled in the eastern pocket of the Himalayan Mountains, is a tiny country with huge aspirations. At the United Nations’ Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, Bhutan announced its new National Organic Policy. This policy will make Bhutan (pop. 700,000) the first nation in the world to have 100% organic agriculture. The announcement drew applause and praise from the crowd, who will be happy to observe and learn from Bhutan’s experience. Without getting into the deeper political issues surrounding Bhutan’s decision, I want to take a step back and look at why we support organic agriculture in the first place.

-Organic gardening is chemical pesticide and fertilizer free.
-Organically grown foods tastes better.
-Organic gardening encourages biodiversity.
-Organic gardening fosters a deeper connection to food.
-Organic gardening creates healthier soil.
-Organic gardening supports healthy ecosystems.

This is just a brief list of some of the benefits of organic farming. There is plenty of information available for those who want to learn more. Here are a few good links, and remember, you can always ask your GCG farmer for more information about the techniques he/she is using in your organic garden.
