This past weekend I discovered why my roommates did not want to compost in our apartment. To my shock and dismay, my friends actually thought composting occurs in the kitchen, or bin where you collect your compost. They thought it would be smellier than normal garbage!
There are lists upon lists of reasons to love Boston. Narrow winding streets, a special way of speaking (Sumnah, not Sumner), a city of firsts including the first college (Harvard) and the first rooftop farm on a grocery store.
I'm Bettina Reece, one of the new fall Business Development Interns at Green City Growers. I am also a Masters candidate in Gastronomy at Boston University and the Assistant General Manager at West Side Lounge in Cambridge. I grew up in Cambridge and Maine, where my family bought local and organic produce whenever possible. Many of our neighbors in Maine grew and sold their own produce. "Local" is a relative term when considering an urban or rural setting, but I've always felt that it didn't have to be.
... Of lettuce? As counter-intuitive as it may feel, thinning is an extremely important step in urban farming and will actually improve yield when working in small spaces. Less really is more!
Every once in awhile the media grabs hold of some piece of information about something shockingly gross in our everyday food, and runs with it. Remember pink slime in 2012? It should come as no surprise that almost all food in this country, processed or not, has something gross about it.
