Rain, wind, cold... Bring on the soups, stews and chilis! It's definitely the season, and what's better than coming home at the end of the day to house filled with the deliciously warming smells of a crock pot chowder? Following is one of our absolute favorites, what we call the Harvest Chowder of Love.
Bread: the final frontier... Because we have a LONG way to go to conquer our complete dependence on and addiction to this American staple. I mean, bread IS the perfect vehicle for a hamburger, BLT, steak bomb, even cucumber and hummus sandwich. Where would we be without bread? Stuck in salad land forever. Or would we?
Intimidated by the idea of starting a large garden? Living in a third story apartment without a yard? Like tea? It might be time for an herbal tea garden. Growing your own herbs is surprisingly easy, as long as you have sunlight and a bit of space - enough for a container garden - even a windowsill will do.
We are often asked why Green City Growers, an urban farming company, doesn't offer hydroponics. We believe there's a difference between feeding the soil (a diverse community of microorganisms) and feeding the plant (in a sterile environment). Hydroponics is important, and has its place in solving the global issue of feeding the world's population by growing up. However, knowing how to feed the soil continues to be possibly the most important component of urban farming, and farming in general for lots of reasons.
